The Victory Shield

The F.A.I spotted two of St. Aidan’s finest and most talented footballers Gavin O'Brien and Ronan Kilkenny both from TY. They were recruited on to the Irish U-16's Irish football team. They are stars of the future in football, so keep a keen eye on them.

“We went down to Tralee in Kerry for the tournament called 'The Victory Shield'. We were part of an all man squad to take on Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.

We arrived down in Kerry on Friday and began training which continued on Saturday and Sunday. This was our preparation for our first game against Northern Ireland.

We both started and I was captain. We lost 3-1. We were all disappointed as we set out to win every game and win the tournament, but this made it a bit harder.

Our next game was against Wales, we did not get to start this time or play, but we won 4-0, so we were happy.

The final game was against Scotland. We needed to win it and hope that Northern Ireland wouldn't win. I started the game and captained the side. Sadly, we drew 0-0. I felt we thoroughly deserved to win after a fantastic team performance. In the end, we got 4 points out of a possible 9. Northern Ireland won the tournament. It was a great educational experience for both of us.”
